One hundred fourteen years ago, flames consumed Baltimore, turning entire city blocks into smoking rubble. How did Baltimore rise from the ashes? We speak to historian Wayne Schaumburg ahead of the fire's anniversary on February 7th.

To learn more, Wayne recommends: "Baltimore Afire," by Harold Williams, and "The Great Baltimore Fire," by Dr. Peter Petersen.

Wayne Schaumburg will be speaking about the Great Baltimore Fire on Sunday, February 4th, at noon at Old Otterbein Methodist Church, and on Sunday, February 11th, from 1-4 p.m. at the Fire Museum of Maryland

Sheilah Kast is the host of On The Record, Monday-Friday, 9:30-10:00 am.
Maureen Harvie is senior producer for On the Record. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and joined WYPR in 2014 as an intern for the newsroom. Whether coordinating live election night coverage, capturing the sounds of a roller derby scrimmage, interviewing veterans, or booking local authors, she is always on the lookout for the next story.
