When former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg made the biggest donation ever to his alma mater Johns Hopkins, earmarked for student aid, some critics said a huge gift to an elite institution will not correct inequities in higher ed.

Hopkins President Ron Daniels said he understands critics who would have like to see the money invested elsewhere. But he contends the Bloomberg gift will trigger fundamental change as Hopkins recruits more diverse students.

Michael Bloomberg explained his record-setting gift in this op-ed in the New York Times.
