As the city marks the bicentennial of the Battle of Baltimore, the Jewish Museum of Maryland opens the exhibit, “The A-Mazing Mendes Cohen,” which tells the tale of real-life Jewish adventurer, Mendes Cohen.
Cohen’s journey reflects the experiences of Jews across America, Europe, and the Middle East in the early 19th Century. A Maryland Humanities Council grant via the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission supported the creation of a living history performance to bring Cohen to life. Museum director Marvin Pinkert outlines the story of one defender of the fort and his extraordinary lifetime that followed.
