The Maryland Humanities Council’s Practicing Democracy Program uses the humanities to spur respectful civic dialogue among Marylanders with divergent viewpoints.
This fall MHC teamed up with the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights in collaboration with local community partners for Defying Definitions, a project engaging communities in Southern Maryland in a series of public and online conversations about stereotypes and identity. Former MHC board member Dr. Christopher M. Leighton, who also serves on the project’s advisory committee, shares his reflections on honoring religious differences and the legacy of religious identity. Dr. Leighton is the Executive Director of the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies.
