Atlas: Hospitals Helping Start The School Year Off Right

Maryland Hospital Association

The summer of 2019 is flying by. As schoolkids across Maryland prepare to return to their classroom, the hospitals and health systems that serve your communities are helping to make sure your kids start the school year off right. They’re offering check-ups, vaccinations, routine care, sports physicals and more.

As devoted caregivers, it’s the privilege of our doctors and nurses to welcome children into the world and to continue to help them grow and to thrive. And, increasingly, we partner with the community and with local schools to make sure students are healthy – and ready to learn.

Research shows poor health is a leading cause of poor academic performance. Bottom line: If kids are sick, hungry, or don’t get enough sleep, they can’t learn. Or worse – if they go untreated for mental health conditions that more than one in twenty has.

Many hospitals already team up with schools throughout the year to supply school nurses, on-campus health care, health education for students and teachers, and other health services. Some hospital-led community programs also engage children and families in fitness and nutrition education.

Maryland’s hospitals are proud to work with schools and families to support the well-being of your students. Investing in kids’ health now is an investment in the future of Maryland.
