When Dr. Elmer Martin and his wife Dr. Joanne Martin founded the nation's first black history wax museum in a store-front in downtown Baltimore in 1983, the museum featured 22 wax figures on display.

Today, the National Great Blacks In Wax Museum, now located on North Avenue, offers museum visitors a unique exploration of African-American History, using great leaders as role models and often revealing little-known, often neglected facts of history.  Dr. Joanne Martin, Museum Co-founder, President, and CEO, reflects on the museum’s incarnation, focus, and message.
