Hogan and Pugh meet for opening of General Assembly

Dominique Maria Bonessi

Two days after Governor Larry Hogan promised $2.5 million for repairs to Baltimore City schools’ troubled heating systems, he met with Mayor Catherine Pugh to talk about the schools and other issues.

Violence reduction and money for the city’s schools were just two of many items on Pugh’s agenda in her meeting with Hogan.

“I want to remind you all I have a great relationship with the governor he always at least listens to what we have to say," said Pugh.

After a year of record homicides, Pugh has made violence reduction her top priority. While her violence reduction initiatives have previously been criticized by the governor, Pugh struck a different tone yesterday after their meeting.

“He thought all of the initiative were really great initiatives," said Pugh. "He’s really looking forward to coming to Baltimore to see our VRI program.”

The violence reduction initiative will fund SafeStreets, computers in police cars, and Rocca, an anti-violence youth program. Pugh also says Hogan applauded her efforts to take charge of city schools last week when the heat went out in 60 schools.

“He thanked me for jumping in and moving that situation forward," said Pugh.

The mayor also thanked Hogan for the additional $11 million being put towards Baltimore schools for the 2019 fiscal year.
