Terrill: The Associated At 100

Provided by The Associated

The American experience is principally an immigrant story and the chapters of the Jewish community of Baltimore reflect the same.

Jewish people have lived in Baltimore for centuries, side by side with our neighbors, in building one of this nation's great cities.

The community grew significantly in the 1800's as Jewish families fled Europe and Russia in the face of persecution and despair.

In search of freedom and a better life, East Baltimore became home to many of these new immigrants. Hope was in abundance but also were significant challenges and difficult times.

As challenges mounted, the Jewish community responded with services to aid in acculturation and self sufficiency. Programs and agencies like The Hebrew Benevolent Society and Housing for Jewish Orphans became important service providers.

With the increased population came a need for coordination and The Associated Jewish Charities was formed in 1920, 100 years ago, almost to the day.

This year, The Associated marks its centennial celebration. Still committed to the values of lifting up those who need a hand and partnering to strengthen the people and neighborhoods which make Baltimore special.

Over the year, we look forward to sharing memories and perspective. Thank you, Baltimore, for being the place that we are proud to call home.
