Outside Mullingar, the new production now running at The Everyman Theatre in Baltimore’s Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District, is a wry, romantic comedy by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley. You probably know some of his other work: he wrote Doubt and Moonstruck. Outside Mullingar is set in that celebrated Irish town, in a lake-dotted province of central Ireland. To prepare this production, director Donald Hicken called on the unique talents of Gary Logan, the Everyman’s resident dialect coach, to help the American actors learn how to speak like authentic Irish folk.
Gary Logan joined Tom Hall and Nathan Sterner to talk about his work with the cast of the Everyman Theatre, and about his approach to the unique Mullingar accent. Their production of Outside Mullingar runs through January 10.
