Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Marks A Century Of Endurance, Great Performances

Baltimore Magazine

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 100th anniversary this season.  The first-ever BSO concert took place on February 11, 1916.  Next month, on that same date, the superstar violinist Joshua Bell joins Marin Alsop and the BSO for a concert to mark that great milestone.  The centennial celebration this season also includes many other great stars in the panoply of classical music, some important premieres, and some new initiatives like the BSO Pulse series with indie rock bands.   To help us take a look back at the BSO's remarkable history, we reached out to a working member of the BSO, oboist Michael Lisicky, who is the author of seven books about the history of department stores, a subject about which he is an internationally acclaimed expert.  Lisicky recently turned his talents to telling the fascinating story of the first 100 years of the BSO.  His book is called The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra:  A Century of Sound.  Michael Lisicky joined Tom in the studio.
