Stargazing in Winter

NASA, ESA, A. Goobar (Stockholm University), and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)

When it’s not pouring down snow, winter can be one of the best times of year for star gazing. So, when this storm is over, you should huddle with some hot chocolate in your backyard--and look up.
One person who does that a lot is Dan Coe.  He’s an astronomer with the Space Telescope Science Institute. We talk with him about the technique that he uses called “gravitational lensing” to see distant galaxies.

You can also do some star gazing at the Space Telescope Science Institute--the telescope is open to the public every Friday evening, weather permitting.  They also have public lectures on the first Tuesday of every month. The next one is scheduled for tomorrow, March 4th, at 8 pm.

This segment was originally broadcast on January 1, 2013.

WYPR's Morning Edition news anchor Ashley Sterner serves up the latest Maryland news and weather every weekday morning, delightfully interspersed with the occasional snarky comment.
