The Venezuelan Jazz Collective is an innovative jazz ensemble composed of an outstanding cast of world-class musicians based in the United States. Their awareness of the jazz tradition and an upbringing surrounded by the music of the Americas, and the world allows these performers to go from one idiom to the other with masterful spontaneity and musicianship.
The music of their debut album “Tendencias” materializes Vielma’s vision of showcasing Venezuelan music genres blended with jazz and concert music elements. The work has been well received by the critics and it was included in the “Best of 2018” lists by NYC Jazz Record, Downbeat, Latin Jazz Network, and Ladosis Magazine.
Francisco “Fran” Vielma was born and raised in Mérida, Venezuela. He recently premiered his suite “Common Grounds” at SFJAZZ, commissioned by the prestigious Chamber Music America - New Jazz Works and has been a DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Fellow since 2019. He has also been a Jazz Road Tours Grantee by South Arts.
Fran has been featured artist for the “Hispanic Heritage Celebration Concert” of the prestigious United States Army Blues Band, having performed his compositions and arrangements. He has toured around the continent with his star-studded Venezuelan Jazz Collective, “Tendencias,” who have recorded Vielma’s original works and arrangements. They were included in best of 2018 lists by Downbeat, Latin Jazz Network, and NYC Jazz Record.
An in-demand performer, he has been involved in concerts, recordings, tours, and festivals around the world with artist such as John Medeski, George Garzone, Paul Winter, Bob Moses, Simon Phillips, Antonio Sanchez, Randy Brecker, Miguel Zenón, David Sánchez, Sean Jones, Michael Rodríguez, Army Blues Band, and Luis Enrique to name a few. He’s a current member of Cesar Orozco & Kamarata Jazz and has featured in the last two releases.
Vielma is a Jazz Department faculty member of Peabody Institute, and he directs the Hidden Treasure Music Workshop and the Fran Vielma Jazz Orchestra. Fran Vielma endorses Meinl Percussion, Vater Drums Sticks, Istanbul Mehmet Cymbals, and Africatedra Venezuelan Percussion.
