Baltimore Police Officer shoots robber

A Baltimore police officer shot and killed a shotgun wielding 20-year-old man involved in an armed robbery at a 7-11 early Monday morning.

Police commissioner Kevin Davis said the officer, Kevin Amy, a 17-year veteran assigned to Northeastern District patrol, followed proper police procedure and turned on his body worn camera.

The commissioner said at a news conference Monday afternoon that he applauded Amy's “tactics, his courage, his bravery,” and said he was thankful the officer, “based on his training and experience with that body worn camera, he now knows to push that button to make sure we have our actions recorded.”

Police spokesman TJ Smith said Amy, who was on routine patrol, pulled into the store’s parking lot in the 6000 block of Harford Road shortly before 3 a.m. as the robbery was in progress.

Smith said the robber, later identified as Eric Garrison, of the 3400 block of White Ave., spotted Amy and fled, raising the sawed-off shotgun with white tape around the handle. The officer fired, striking Garrison,  who died later at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Smith said police have seen that same gun in surveillance videos of other convenience store robberies over the summer.

Officer Amy has been place on routine administrative leave.
