The fast-growing Port of Baltimore welcomed the largest container ship to ever visit Maryland at its Seagirt Marine Terminal on Sunday. The Gunde Maersk has a capacity to handle 11,000 20-foot-long containers.
The ship originated in China and stopped in New York before coming to Baltimore. Previously the largest container ship to visit the Port of Baltimore was a Mediterranean Shipping Co. vessel in 2017 that had a capacity of 9,700 20-foot-long containers. The Port of Baltimore is one of the few ports on the East Coast that has a 50-foot deep channel and super cranes able to accommodate large ships coming through the widened Panama Canal.
