The iconic Civil Rights activist Helena Hicks passed away last Thursday. In 1955 she led a sit-in at Read’s Drugstore that led to the desegregation of the chain’s stores throughout Baltimore. This was five years before the lunch counter sit-ins at the Woolworth’s in Greensboro, NC, which drew national attention.
