Draw upon your favorite works of Edgar Allan Poe and enter the 6th Annual Saturday “Visiter” awards, opening January 19, Poe’s birthday; deadline to enter is May 30, 2024.
The Saturday “Visiter” Awards are an international contest honoring a new generation of artists and writers inspired by the legacy of Edgar Allan Poe and recognizes the best in multiple categories such as film, art, performance, and writing. The Saturday “Visiter” Awards are named after the prize a young Poe won in 1833 from the Saturday Visiter, a weekly periodical published in Baltimore. That prize launched the famed writer’s career. The fee for SVA submission is $25 per entry and nominees will be given a ticket to the Black Cat Ball, a prize medal and a “Saturday Visiter Awards” designation for their work. Judges for the 2024 awards include representatives from preeminent Poe institutions and arts locations, including Baltimore’s own Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum, The Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia, The Poe Cottage in New York, and others.
Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams is a 50-year career retrospective of artist Joyce J. Scott, one of the most significant artists of our time.
Co-organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and Seattle Art Museum (SAM), this exhibition was developed in close dialogue with the Baltimore-based artist and her collaborators to reveal the full breadth of Scott’s singular vision through more than 120 objects from public and private collections across the United States. The exhibition will feature significant examples of the artist’s sculpture—both stand-alone and wearable pieces—alongside performance footage, garments, prints, and materials from Scott’s personal archive. Joyce J. Scott: Walk a Mile in My Dreams also features a newly commissioned installation and an expansive catalog.
The second in a series of end-of-the-year exhibitions showcasing works by graduating Art majors working in a range of media from two- and three-dimensional approaches to digital and new media.
String players ages 12-20 are invited to audition for Young Musicians of Baltimore's 2024-2025 Season. Under the artistic leadership of music directors Doug Jameson and Melissa Hullman, students explore chamber orchestra repertoire ranging from the 17th century to the present day. With regular faculty coaching and individualized feedback, students develop technique in ensemble playing, style, and musical phrasing. Young Musicians of Baltimore is dedicated to developing artistic talent through adventuresome programming, building musical community, and equity and inclusion in the arts. Auditions will be held live on Saturday June 22nd and Saturday August 24th beginning at 10am. There is no fee to audition. Audition information is available at ymobmusic.org.
First Saturdays is a series of free hands-on projects and activities for children held on the first Saturday of each month. This series will feature local community partners showcasing their skills in movement, storytelling, arts, tinkering, and more!
Teens are invited to the Walters Art Museum on Thursdays for Teen Lab, a space for teens to hang out, create art, and make friends. During this drop-in program, teens can participate in creative collaborative activities, explore different cultures through art, or simply socialize, complete homework, and check out our galleries. Teens can stop by anytime between 4-6 p.m. to join in. Ages 13-17.
We invite novices, students, and practicing artists of all ages to come together and spend your evening drawing from your surroundings. During this experience, participants will receive light instruction on techniques to expand their skill set in a multi-sensory environment of live music and art. All you need to bring is an interest in drawing—we’ll provide the materials for you!
Stocks in the Future Hosts Sports Spectacular Fundraising EventFundraiser will be held on April 25, 2024 at Guilford Hall Brewery
BALTIMORE, Md. March 25, 2024. Stocks in the Future (SIF), a non-profit organization dedicated to equity in financial literacy, announces its highly anticipated signature fundraiser, the 2024 Sports Spectacular. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, 2024 at Guilford Hall Brewery, from 6 p.m - 8 p.m. Speakers include Orioles Hall of Famer, Mike Bordick, from The Baseball Warehouse LLC, and SIF students. Guests can network with other professionals and participate in a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia. Tickets are $95 each. Proceeds directly support SIF's efforts to provide financial literacy skills to middle school students in Baltimore. "At Stocks in the Future, we believe in the transformative power of education and financial literacy," said Rebecca Lange-Thernes, the Executive Director of SIF. "The Sports Spectacular event not only raises vital funds for our programs but also creates awareness about the importance of investing in the next generation."For more than 20 years, SIF has partnered with Baltimore-area middle schools to teach students financial literacy skills, with a focus on wealth building through investments. Tad Janes, producing artistic director of the Maryland Ensemble Theatre in Frederick, Maryland, guest directs this adaptation of Carl Sternheim’s classic 1910 farce by comic actor and author Steve Martin. Set in 1910 Germany, Louise Markes, a housewife bored of her bureaucrat husband and their conservative existence, attends a royal parade, where a wardrobe malfunction causes unexpected attention.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors (over 60), active military members and veterans, students, as well as those with a McDaniel College ID.
