WYPR Receives National Edward R. Murrow Award For 2021

BALTIMORE—WYPR has been honored with a Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) 2021 National Edward R. Murrow Award for “Large Market Radio Station: Hard News.”

The winner, “Maryland Foster Children Stay in Hospitals Because They Have Nowhere Else To Go,” from reporter Rachel Baye, revealed the added trauma of Maryland’s hard-to-place foster children who are languishing in hospitals, because there is nowhere to place them. The story originally aired on NPR’s Weekend Edition in February 2020.

Earlier this year, WYPR was honored with a RTDNA 2021 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award, in the category of “Hard News” for the same story.

Baye joined the WYPR news department in 2015 and covers Maryland government and politics for the station. Prior to WYPR, she was a reporter for the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit investigative journalism organization in Washington, D.C., and The Washington Examiner. Her work has also appeared in several national and regional outlets.

The RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news, honoring news organizations that demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of broadcast and digital journalism. WYPR and Baye will be recognized during the National Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala on October 27, 2021.
