BPD Releases Details on Police Involved Shooting

The Baltimore Police Department released more details Tuesday afternoon about a police involved shooting last Thursday. Police were called to the University of Maryland Medical Center because a man with a mental health problem was welding a knife.

Police identified the victim only as a 27-year-old male, citing privacy reasons.

A spokesman said three officers arrived at the medical center at 710 West Pratt Street and confronted the man.

In a police video, the man threw chairs at officers as they tried to calm him.

After 10 minutes, the man charged at the officers with the knife. Two officers shot him in the upper body and leg, and the third used a taser on the man. The man is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Police spokesman, TJ Smith, says it shows the department is learning how to respond to individuals with mental health needs.

“You can tell that training is in place. And the officers that have been through it and the entire agency is going through it, are able to try their best to bring back,” said Smith. “You know dial it back a bit.”

He says city police officers have received behavioral education strategies team training and crisis intervention training to deescalate situations like these.
