Concert Drugs

The street drug ecstasy initially gained popularity in the underground rave scene, but has recently become a fixture at music festivals. Known as the “love drug,” ecstasy produces feelings of euphoria and emotional openness. However it can be dangerous--fatal even. Earlier this summer, two young men died following a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion, where police suspect there had been widespread ecstasy use. Now many are asking if these types of tragedies can be prevented. Our guests: Gary Tuggle, assistant special agent-in-charge of the Drug Enforcement Agency's Baltimore Division Office; Dr. Matthew Johnson, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at The Johns Hopkins University; and Alys Matthews, chapter director for the DC-based DanceSafe, a safe-use organization.
