This morning, Baltimore City Police Commissioner Kevin Davis joins Maryland Morning host, Tom Hall. In July, he was appointed interim Commissioner to replace Anthony Batts, and in mid-October, he was sworn in as the city's permanent police commissioner. He heads the 8th largest police department in the country, at a time when police misconduct cases in Chicago, New Orleans and other cities have focused attention on the frayed relationship between police and, in particular, communities of color. Here in Baltimore, the trial of Officer William Porter is wrapping up its second week. There are five more officers awaiting trial, charged in the death of Freddie Gray in police custody last April. A verdict in any one of those trials could spark more violence, and as Commissioner Davis completes his 6th month on the job, the police department faces a number of serious challenges, including a homicide and crime rate that are the worst in decades.
