The painter Grace Hartigan taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art for more than 40 years. By the time she joined the MICA faculty in 1965, she was one of the most celebrated painters of her generation. In a new biography, Cathy Curtis chronicles Hartigan’s difficult childhood, her rise to prominence as part of the New York School of artists in the 1940s and 50s, her four marriages, and her lasting influence in the art world and on the scores of artists she taught.
