Mental Illness in Prisons and Jails

It’s estimated that there are about 4,000 people in Maryland prisons with a diagnosable mental illness. A new, controversial report from the Treatment Advocacy Center and the National Sherriff’s Association has drawn attention to those inmates and how they get treatment.

With SheilahKast to talk about the report is Dr. Fuller Torrey. He’s the lead author of the report and founder of the Treatment Advocacy Center and associate director of the Stanley Medical Research Institute in Chevy Chase. Also with me is Dr. Brian Hepburn, Executive Director of the Maryland Hygiene Administration, which oversees the state’s mental health system.

Sheilah Kast is the host of On The Record, Monday-Friday, 9:30-10:00 am.
