For the first time since its original broadcast during World War II, WYPR presents the 1943 Sunpapers Christmas Special on Friday, December 20.
Produced by the Baltimore Sun's war correspondents, this show was broadcast from Army bases in England on Dec. 25, 1943, and it featured more than 50 soldiers, airmen and Red Cross volunteers sending greetings over the airwaves to loved ones back in Maryland. The program will air in its entirety, then we'll talk about it with Paul McCardell, the Baltimore Sun librarian who discovered the 70-year-old recording in the newspaper's archives; Sun media editor Steve Sullivan; a veteran who was in the broadcast and the relatives of others. Make sure to visit baltimoresun.com for archival photographs, stories and interviews about the broadcast. This program will air a second time on WYPR on December 24 from noon until 2 pm.
