International Newswrap: 6.15.18

It's the Midday International Newswrap: the President returned to Washington this week after histrionics at the G7 meeting in Canada, and history-making in Singapore.

Mr. Trump had great things to say about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and stunningly negative things to say about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, one of America's greatest allies. Is a denuclearized Korean Peninsula more possible this week than it had been in many months?

Italy and the United States both toughened their stances on immigration.  Attorney General Jeff Sessions ended asylum protections for those fleeing domestic and gang violence, and defended the Trump Administration's new "zero-tolerance" policy of separating children from parents detained for illegal entry across the southern US border.  Italian Interior Minister Mateo Salvini doubled down on his commitment to stem the flow of immigrants arriving in Italy by turning away a rescue boat of more than 600 migrants from Libya.  Spain has granted them safe harbor.

Tom speaks with Christine Hong,Associate Professor at UC Santa Cruz and executive board member of the Korea Policy Institute.  Dr. Hong joins us on the phone from Santa Cruz, California.

And Julian Borger, World Affairs Editor at The Guardian, joins us on the line from Washington, DC.
