Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport recorded more passengers in June than Northern Virginia's two major airports combined, according to new data released by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
And it's largely due to a single airline. BWI, Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport have distributed the area's air travel market pretty evenly since at least 2014. And for the first two months of the Covid-19 pandemic that held true. BWI saw roughly 724,000 passengers in June — 1.7 million fewer than the same month last year, but more than 52% of all people who flew into and out of the Greater Washington-Baltimore region in that month, according to the report. Most of BWI’s traffic comes from just one domestic commercial carrier, Southwest Airlines Co. In June, it flew 592,000 passengers into and out of its BWI hub, per MWAA data. It maintains an 82% market share in Baltimore.
