Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast | About

Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast finds the most intelligent and intriguing voices to probe the “whys” and “who cares” behind the headlines. From the Atlantic to the Appalachians, we probe beyond the regional news headlines, unravel local implications of national news stories, and explore the science, history, arts, and culture of Maryland.

Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9 a.m., you’ll hear analysis of important news, artists from across the creative spectrum, scientists and historians getting excited about nerdy stuff, and conversations with people we think are just plain interesting. Whether it’s education policy or epic poetry, invasive plants or innovative pianists, tune into Maryland Morning to be enlightened and entertained.

Maryland Morning is produced by Lawrence Lanahan, Stephanie Hughes, and Matt Purdy. Our interns are Brandon Green and Lee Utterback.

Jamyla Kay is assisting Maryland Morning with the production of "The Lines Between Us," a year-long multimedia exploration of inequality in the Baltimore region. The series premiered last September.

Nathan Sterner directs and engineers. Tom Hall, music director of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, is our culture editor.

Our logo and branding are by Bruce Willen and Nolen Strals at Post Typography. Our theme is by Chris Kennedy at Clean Cuts. Coffee for our guests is provided by Zeke’s Coffee in Lauraville.

Audio for each day’s show is posted by the end of the day it airs. Please contact us at mdmorning@wypr.org if you can’t find information about a story you heard on our show. You may also have heard the story on NPR’s Morning Edition.

UPDATE, April 2013: Summer Internships Available

Are you a fan of public radio and quality journalism? Do you want to help make it happen at WYPR?

Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast is looking for summer interns. You don’t need experience in public radio, but we do require a basic grasp of news judgment, plus research and writing skills. An ideal candidate would also be interested in the topics covered in Maryland Morning interviews: government, history, science, energy, environment, technology, business, and arts and culture.

While we do assign interns administrative office tasks, we also involve them in most aspects of the program: researching and booking interviews, editing recorded audio, writing copy for hosts, participating in editorial meetings, pitching ideas, transcribing field tape, and reaching out to listeners on social media. The schedule is flexible, but we are looking for a commitment of two full days per week.

We’re looking for a creative and collegial person with a strong work ethic, the ability to work well both independently and on a team, and a dedication to fair, accurate, and compelling journalism. You can learn a lot working with us—and have a lot of fun, too.

Learn more about Maryland Morning at our website. Any questions? Call Lawrence Lanahan (410-735-1612) or Sheilah Kast (410-735-1601).

APPLICATION PROCESS

The spring internship starts in early June and runs through mid-August. The internship is unpaid.

E-mail your application to MdMorning@wypr.org no later than noon, Friday, May 10. The subject line should read “Summer 2013 Intern Application.”

- Resume, including the names, titles, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of two references.
- Two writing samples. If you haven’t done journalism, we’ll accept research papers, creative writing examples, or even blog posts that you’re proud of. We’re looking for sharp research skills, and clear and compelling writing.
