A Baltimore County Murder From Fifteen Years Ago, Revisited

Meredith Heuer

Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee disappeared one January afternoon in 1999. Her body was found less than a month later, buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park. An ex-boyfriend, 17-year-old AdnanSyed, was arrested for her murder. He was convicted and is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Western Maryland. But, he says he is innocent.

"I just sometimes wish they could look in my brain and see how I really felt about her and no matter what someone else would say about me they would see: this guy had no ill will towards her. Whatever motivation someone had to kill someone, it didn’t exist in me, you know what I mean?”

That is Syed speaking with Sarah Koenig. She’s a producer on the public radio show “This American Life” and a former reporter for The Baltimore Sun. She and the “This American Life” staff were so intrigued by the case, they’ve launched a new podcast devoted to the story called “Serial”. They will tell the story stretched out over the course of a season, like a television show. Sarah Koenig joins Sheilah on the line from State College, Pennsylvania, to talk about it.

You can learn more about "Serial" at their website. The first episode will air this weekend on “This American Life”. You can hear it on WYPR at noon tomorrow and at three on Sunday.
