Without a growing economy to fund social programs while keeping taxes relatively low, the ideological battle between Republicans and Democrats over the role of government will intensify and, without mitigation, deepen social and economic divisions. Our guest this hour is Thomas Edsall, once of The Baltimore Sun and for 25 years a national political correspondent of The Washington Post, is author of “The Age of Austerity: How Scarcity Will Remake American Politics.” He contributes to the New York Times Opinionator and holds a chair in public affairs journalism at Columbia University
