Legislation in the General Assembly would expand hours for early voting in Maryland and bring extra early voting centers to Baltimore, Prince George's, and Montgomery Counties.

Critics say the bill would expand opportunities for fraud and that the money is better spent on other priorities, like transportation. Supporters say voting could be convenient, and that long lines in previous elections make the case.

Today, Nathan Sterner talks to Common Cause Maryland executive director Jennifer Bevan-Dangel, who testified in support of the bill, and Republican Delegate Kathy Afzali of Frederick County, who opposes it.

Two audio extras here: first, the full, unedited version of the on-air conversation, and a discussion about whether distance--how far voters have to go to reach an early voting center--should be considered, along with population, in determining the number of centers per county.
