"Clearly, this isn't "Two Gents" for purists" -J. Wynn Rousuck
In Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's production of "The Two Gentlemen of Verona," director Patrick Kilpatrick set the play in 1991, and the two gents' style isn't the only twist on this early Shakespearan comedy.
The main characters Proteus and Valentine have manservants-although in this production, Valentine's servant Speed is played by a woman. Rousuck says this re-casting provides "an added romantic undercurrent."
Although the play is being performed in The Other Barn in Columbia, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is making plans to move into a new Baltimore space in 2014, which Rousuck provides some details on in this review.
The show is up until March 17.
