Walter P. Carter was a leader in the struggle for civil rights in Baltimore. Even if you’re new to Baltimore, his name may sound familiar to you. It’s on the side of an elementary school, a recreation center, a college library, and a daycare. It’s also in the title of a new documentary about the man, Walter P. Carter: Champion for Change. 

Executive Producer of the film, Anthony Lehman, joins Sheilah to talk about it. He’s the Chair of Psychiatry and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. And, Delegate Jill P. Carter, daughter of Walter P. Carter, joins us by phone.

The documentary will air at 10:30 p.m. on Monday, February 25th, on Maryland Public Television.

Jill P. Carter mentioned her father's work with Activists, Inc. In September 1971, just a few months after Walter P. Carter died, the group published a report on unfair housing practices targeting black families. You can read that report here.
