"If I do not write about them, nobody else will." -Char Bah

Char Bah. Credit:alexandriava.govResearching one's ancestry has become a popular activity-there are websites, television shows, and businesses devoted to this very topic. But how does genealogy differ when ethnicity is taken into account?

Genealogist Char Bah says incomplete record-keeping by slave owners, marriages not being recognized sometimes years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and various surnames among relatives are just a few of the unique challenges that African-Americans face when attempting to find their ancestors.

She often travels, giving lectures on African-American genealogy, as navigating through sometimes complex African-American family histories may be challenging for some.

In this interview, she speaks to Sheilah by phone from her home in Stafford, VA.

Char Bah's next speaking engagement:
Saturday, March 16, 2013 – “Beginner’s Genealogy”
Time:  9:30 a.m. – 12 noon
Location:  Central Rappahannock Regional Library
