The United States is the most wasteful country in the world, accounting for only 5 percent of world's population yet creating 25 percent of its trash. Americans make 50 percent more garbage per person than other Western economies with similar standards of living, with each American on track to produce 102 tons of garbage in a lifetime. Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Edward Humes on the culture of American wastefulness in his book, "Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash."
