Catholic leaders launched a nationwide campaign against the Obama administration's health policies in Baltimore Thursday while, in Philadelphia, a jury convicted a senior church official of covering up sexual abuses by American priests. Against this backdrop, a conversation with Josef Goethals, who tells a story familiar to many Catholics who came of age in Vatican II (1962-1965), the reforms that inspired millions while widening the divide between conservatives and liberals in the faith. A native of Belgium and a seminarian in Rome in the 1960s, Goethals relates how the spirit of Vatican II influenced his life, then led him to a new vocation outside of the priesthood.
