Yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation to a gathering of cardinals in Rome.  (You can watch it on YouTube here, via RomeReports.com.) He’s the first pope to do so in 600 years.  He said he lacked the strength to adequately fulfill the duties of role. A papal spokesman said a successor is expected to be elected by the College of Cardinals by Easter, which falls on March 31.
