While many of us are still transitioning from summer to fall, Maryland students have been hard at work for a week already.  School started last Monday, and in Baltimore, some students will be taking on a longer day, remaining at school until 6 pm, instead of leaving at 3.  It’s called the “ExpandED Schools program,”  in which schools partner with organizations that provide after-school activities.

The program is being piloted in 11 schools in three cities: New York, New Orelans, and Baltimore. Sheilah talks about the program with Khaleel Desaque, principal of Hilton Elementary School, which is partnering with ChildFirst Authority, and Chris Caruso, Senior Vice President for ExpandED Schools program, run by the national non-profit TASC.

The other two Baltimore area schools participating are Harlem Park Elementary and Middle School, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary School, both partnering with the BELL Foundation.
