Filmmaker Sig Libowitz. Photograph by Christopher Moore. For about two years, from June 2010 until May of this year, our show held a series called the Maryland Morning Screen Test. Each month, in front of a live audience, we spoke to Maryland filmmakers about their work.  This past March, our guest was filmmaker Sig Libowitz. He enrolled at the University of Maryland School of Law after a career producing films in New York and L.A. In a class about Guantanamo legal proceedings, he discovered the “Combatant Status Review Tribunal,” where prisoners of the Global War on Terror were not allowed lawyers, and they couldn’t see the evidence against them.

Libowitz read thousands of pages of tribunal transcripts, and he wrote and produced The Response, a thirty-minute courtroom drama that was shortlisted for an Academy Award.  The film was directed by Baltimore native Adam Rodgers.

In October, The Response will be shown in Washington at an event sponosred by the DC Bar Association.  If you're interested in attending, you can be in touch with him through the film’s website and Facebook page.  You can also go there to get a copy of the film or schedule a screening of your own.

Take a listen to the fascinating conversation that took place after the screening, including lots of audience question.
