The first incarnation of the International Tracing Service was established in 1943 with the goal of tracing people who’d been displaced during World War II. Now, close to six decades later, the organization still receives hundreds of requests for information from people who were either victims of Nazi persecution, or from their family members.
For the first time, an American will lead the service. Rebecca Boehling is a professor of history at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She’s also the Director of UMBC's Dresher Center for the Humanities. Beginning in January, she’ll become the director of the International Tracing Service's Holocaust-era archive in Germany. She talks with Sheilah about the appointment.
