Preventing the spread of AIDS and helping those who are HIV-positive to manage the disease seems like a job for doctors and nurses. The University of Maryland thinks differently. It’s implementing a new program called Preparing The Future that focuses on including students not training in the medical field to become part of the conversation about--and part of the effort to test Baltimore residents for--HIV and AIDS.
Derek Spencer is executive director of the JACQUES Initiative at the Institute of Human Virology in the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine. JACQUES stands for Joint AIDS Community Quest for Unique and Effective Treatment Strategies.
