Last week, the United States Preventive Services Task Force issued draft recommendations stating that taking a vitamin D / calcium supplement does not necessarily prevent bone fractures in women.
Tom talks about what this recommendation means--and what women can do instead--with Monica Reinagel. Monica is a licensed nutritionist in Baltimore and the host and creator of the podcast Nutrition Diva.

Exercise for Building Bones and Preventing Falls
Monica mentioned today that weight bearing exercises are important for building bone mass. A great exercise for building bone mass is tai chi. It is an intensive weight bearing exercise that is also gentle and relaxing and can be practiced by everyone. She also mentioned the importance of balance for preventing falls and fractures especially among seniors. Tai chi has been shown in studies to be the best exercise for balance. The CDC recommends tai chi for fall prevention for seniors. For info go to www.baltimoretaichi.com or email taichieric@comcast.net
