President Richard Nixon declared the United States government’s War on Drugs in 1971. Now, according to a recent Rasmussen poll, 82 percent of Americans believe we are losing that war. Just last month, voters in of Colorado and Washington state legalized recreational use of marijuana, though federal laws still say it’s illegal.
Benjamin Wallace-Wells wrote a cover story for New York Magazine last month about the complicated path we’re navigating as opinions on drug policy shift. Wallace-Wells, who lives in Baltimore, joins Sheilah in the studio to talk about it.
