Michelle Deal-Zimmerman, travel writer and content editor for travel at the Baltimore Sun, said bus services like BoltBus and megabus are growing in popularity given the amount of cities served and affordable fares.

"Some of these companies are promising seats for as little as $1 one-way," Deal-Zimmerman said.

She speculates that companies are able to do this because of the high volume of passengers that can be packed onto the buses and bus services' ability to attract travelers who can be more flexible in booking their travel dates.

To sort through the various transportation options, apps, and gadgets that can assist and bombard travelers as they plan holiday vacations, Sheilah talks in-studio with Michelle Deal-Zimmerman.

The Baltimore Sun has more recommendations on apps and gadgets here.
