About a year ago, Baltimore lost one of its leading arts advocates when Nancy Haragan, the founding Director of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, died of cancer.  Our own Tom Hall worked closely with Nancy and other arts leaders as a member of the GBCA board. On December 6th of last year, Tom offered this remembrance.

Since her passing, two of Baltimore’s most prominent arts institutions have honored Nancy’s legacy.  The Café in the Maryland Institute College of Art’s newly renovated Graduate Studio Center is called, simply, “Nancy.” It’s at the exact site where Nancy’s office at the GBCA once stood. And, the Baltimore Museum of Art has named the gallery on the third floor of its new Contemporary Wing the Nancy M. Haragan Memorial Gallery. It currently features paintings by Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and others.

Another update: The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance established the Nancy Haragan Program Fund in 2011. The fund is used to support the cultural community in Baltimore.
