When Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker was premiered in 1892, it was by no means a success. Despite some bad reviews then, by the 1960s it had become a staple of ballet companies across the globe. Here in Maryland this month, there have been performances all over the state, including a run at the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore last weekend that featured the famed Moscow Ballet.

For years, the Baltimore School for the Arts has offered Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece in multiple performances at their school in Baltimore’s Mt. Vernon neighborhood. On Friday and Saturday, for the first time, they’re moving to the Patricia & Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric for four performances that are the result of a collaboration Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Today, Tom talks to Chris Ford, Director of the School for the Arts, and Paul Meecham, President and CEO of the BSO. 

You’ve got four chances to catch the School for the Arts dancers and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on Friday and Saturday at the Patricia & Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric. Each day, there are matinees at 2:00 p.m. and evening performances at 7:30 p.m.
