Last Thursday, the hopes of those who thought the Sparrows Point steel mill might one day produce steel again were dashed. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz announced that the owners' plan to level the buildings on Sparrows Point in the next few years, and sell off all the equipment.
Sheilah talks with Kamenetz about job training for former Sparrows Point workers. We also wanted to hear from some of the people most affected by the plant’s closure, the former steel-workers. Robert Price was a millwright at Sparrows Point. He was laid off in July. Sheilah spoke to him by phone on Friday.
We also spoke with the President of Community College of Baltimore County, Sandra Kurtinitis. The college is providing job training to former Sparrows Point workers. You can call (443) 840-5059 for more information.
And, here's a resource guide created by Baltimore County for laid off RG Steel workers.
You can read the City Paper's profile of Robert Price here.
The Maryland Food Bank has held three food give-aways in Dundalk this fall for former Sparrows Point workers. In all, they gave out 180,000 pounds of food to unemployed steelworkers. They're planning additional give-aways in the upcoming months. You can learn more at their website.
