At one point, Sparrows Point steel mill was the largest steel manufacturer in the world. With all that production came communities to support the steelworkers working in the mill. Now, those communities—and the way of life that developed around steelmaking--are being recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council.
Joining us now to talk about it is Elmer Hall and Louis Diggs. They’re both oral historians who have chronicled life in Sparrows Point.
Elmer Hall's oral history on the town of Sparrows Point is called Diary of A Mill Town: Recollections of the Bungalows and Sparrows Point, Maryland. Find out more about Louis Diggs' book, From the Meadows to the Point. And, more on the ALTA awards here.
