11-21-12: Oxes Look Back

If you’re struggling to think of a holiday gift for the young music lover in your life, legendary Baltimore band Oxes has a new single coming out.

A little over a decade ago, Oxes captured the hearts of Baltimore music fans with their loud guitars, weird meters, and even weirder performances. They eventually started touring, becoming ambassadors for a Baltimore music scene that didn’t have nearly the amount of exposure it does now.

Over the summer, two members of Oxes—Marc Miller and Chris Freeland—came into our studios, and the other Oxes, Nat Fowler, joined them by phone from Berlin. They spoke with Maryland Morning music critic Tim Kabara about their early days.

Oxes appear on a new split seven-inch single with Baltimore band Microkingdom. Three recognizable names related to this record are Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, and Will Oldham. That's all we'll say; learn more at Friends Records, where it's up for presale.

Thanks to intern Vicky Plestis and former Maryland Morning producer Katherine Gorman for producing this piece.
