10-2-12: Referenda Extravaganza

Governor Martin O’Malley is supporting controversial referendum questions on the Maryland ballot that would legalize same-sex marriage and allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at public colleges and universities under certain conditions. Those two ballot questions, and others related to redistricting and expanded gaming, could push some voters to the polls on November 6. But they’ll also pull some traditional Democratic constituencies in some uncomfortable directions.

Todd Eberly is an assistant professor of political science and public policy at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.  He joins Sheilah to look at the political implications of these referenda.

The past week has seen two polls on the referenda: one from Gonzales Research and Marketing Strategies and the one OpinionWorks conducted for the Baltimore Sun.

Web extras: Todd Eberly addresses the intensity of opposition to same-sex marriage, expanded gaming, and the DREAM Act, and whether that intensity will sustain over the five weeks between now and the election. He also discusses potential tension among same-sex marriage proponents over the expanded gaming referendum, and the potential effect of referenda votes on Governor O'Malley's national profile.
