1-7-13: Facebook and Organs

Seven months ago, Facebook announced a new tool that allows users to announce their status as organ donors. In case you’re wondering—you do it by “adding a life event.” It also provided a link to the state registries to make it official.
The first day the tool was available, the number of people registered as organ donors spiked, with a 24 fold increase nationwide. That varied depending on where you were in the country--Maryland was on par with the national average.
One of the people studying this response is Andrew Cameron, a transplant surgeon and professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins. He went to college with Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, and helped to launch the initiative. Sheilah talks with him about the impact.
In this web extra, you can hear Andrew Cameron talk about the impact of the organ donor status tool on living donations.
