Every two years, Baltimore’s Homeless Services Program leads a count of the city’s homeless population as part of requirements for federal funding.
The last census, in 2011, counted over 4,000 homeless in Baltimore. Most of those 4,000 are only temporarily homeless. But, it’s estimated that about 15-percent, or about 600 people, are chronically homeless in the city.
In a homeless census being held in a little under two weeks, the city won’t just count the homeless; they will find housing for the 75 most vulnerable. The initiative is called “75 Journeys Home” and is part of a nationwide campaign to house 100,000 of our country’s chronically homeless.
Joining Sheilah to talk about it is Olivia Farrow, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Human Services. And, Gabby Knighton, Outreach Coordinator in the city’s Homeless Services Program.
You can volunteer to participate in the homeless census here.
